The Student
Day 1
The scorching Sun coupled by the humidity in the air has started
torturing the people around, but Sunil has no time to pay heed to the rising
temperature or the increasing discomfort. He is engrossed in his summer
homework.
“Sir will be furious if I am unable to complete the task.” He uttered
under his breath as he sat out in the courtyard of is house with his notebook. Sunil cannot get his
mind off the cane in the hands of his master and the scolding that he would be
entitled to, if he is unable to finish the piece of work within the stipulated
time period.
The stagnant plants in the adjacent garden seemed to be witnessing the favorite
student of Ghatak Sir, struggling with
the tough mathematical problems that he has been challenged with.
“Sunil.” The sudden voice of Ghatak Sir took Sunil by surprise.
“Oh, he is going to scold me now for not sitting straight while
studying. I wish I saw him before.” Sunil thought as he stood up from his mat
on the floor to greet his teacher. “Hello, Sir.” He said.
Ghatak wasn’t in the best of his appearance. His eyes were red, his skin
burned by the scorching Sun and he seemed to be severely dehydrated.
“May I have a glass of water please.” He said as he sat on the floor,
completely exhausted.
“Sir, let me bring you a chair.”
“That wouldn’t be required, just get me some water.” The teacher
replied, his voice hoarse with dryness.
Sunil ran inside to get a glass of water for his school teacher. He was
happy that he escaped any kind of rebuke but tha man’s situation got him
worried.
“aah,” Mr Ghatak relaxed a bit as he took a large sip from the glass of
cold water. “you saved my life today. One more please.”
Sunil poured him another glass of water, followed by two more until
finally it seemed that Mr Ghatak’s thirst has been quenched.
Sunil woke up with a start. It took him some time to get out of the stupor.
A dream-yes a dream indeed.
Day 2
Sunil is Forty-two years old now. He has left his small village after
his tenth level board exam and is a practicing doctor in Patna now- a good
doctor but suffering himself from ailments of arthritis and diabetes.
Sunil is on his way to Gaya ignoring the scorching heat and all
financial and personal obstacles that fell in his way.
He has read the toughest of the philosophies and the deepest
explanations that Science offers. But there are certain things that goes beyond
books and numbers. He is on his way to perform
the last rites of his dearest school teacher Tarun Ghatak who died fifteen
years back leaving no next-of-kin behind.
