Aniruddha Live(FB)-World No Tobacco Day,2020

The following is the Subject matter of my live session on Facebook.

Talk on No Tobacco Day:

Good Evening friends. Today is World No Tobacco Day. While most of us are well aware about the harm that tobacco consumption causes to our society there’s a whole new challenge that is threatening of grievous consequences.
It is now an open secret that the tobacco producers whose products result in more than 8 million deaths per year are now focussed on targeting the youth to replace their dead customer base. There are two definite advantage of this:
  • The younger you get them addicted, the longer they consume-so basically you have a long term potential customer.
  • The youth are easier to manipulate, so easier customer base to acquire.
Tactics of marketing such as parties and concerts hosted by the tobacco and related industries, e-cigarette flavours that attract youth like bubble-gum and candy, e-cigarette representatives presenting in schools, and product placement in popular youth streaming shows represent just the tip of the iceberg. Paid promotion on the mainstream media and paying Social media influencers to promote tobacco and nicotine-based products is a regular matter.  These products are also very subtly glorified in various shows that leads to a long lasting and profound impact on the fertile minds.
The situation has been exacerbated by the COVID19 pandemic. It is an infectious disease that primarily attacks the lungs. Smoking impairs lung function making it harder for the body to fight off coronaviruses and other diseases. Tobacco is also a major risk factor for noncommunicable diseases like cardiovascular disease, cancer, respiratory disease and diabetes which put people with these conditions at higher risk for developing severe illness when affected by COVID19. Available research suggests that smokers are at higher risk of developing severe disease and death
But the irony is, even during a global pandemic, the tobacco and nicotine industry persist by pushing products that limit people’s ability to fight coronavirus and recover from the disease. The industry has offered free branded masks and delivery to your door during quarantine and has even lobbied for their products to be listed as ‘essential’.
We need to be extra careful in protecting the Generation Z from this extremely harmful addiction.
WHO, this year, has specifically stressed on the importance of ethically approved, high-quality, systematic research that will contribute to advancing individual and public health while also emphasizing that unproven techniques must be avoided. Nicotine replacement therapies, such as gum and patches are designed to help smokers quit tobacco. WHO recommends that smokers take immediate steps to quit by using proven methods such as toll-free quit lines, mobile text-messaging programmes, and nicotine replacement therapies.
Elevated heart rate and blood pressure drop has been observed within just twenty minutes of quitting. After 12 hours, the carbon monoxide level in the bloodstream drops to normal. Within 2-12 weeks, circulation improves and lung function increases. After 1-9 months, coughing and shortness of breath decrease.
It is best to avoid such addictions-guys, there is nothing cool in contacting lungs and oral cancer. Smoking cigarettes does not make you a Satyajit Ray, just like keeping a long beard won’t make you a Rabindranath Tagore or having no hair on your head won’t make you a Mahatma Gandhi. For all the people who are already addicted to these harmful elements- the way out is to get out of the soup immediately and get rid of the addiction in all forms. We as a an individual and as a responsible member of our society should take it on us to prevent the damage to valuable human resources and priceless lives.
